COURSE OVERVIEW
The SA Maritime School operates its own Driving Academy for the benefit of its learners and the public. The academy was established in 2013.
Both vehicles are fitted with dual controls and are comprehensively insured. Our instructor is fully qualified.
FORKLIFT SKILLS PROGRAMME

COURSE OVERVIEW
The person credited with this Unit Standard can operate a counter-balanced lift truck in a safe manner. They will also be able to conduct pre-and-post inspections to ensure the performance of the lift truck.
The person will be able to handle the loading and storage of freight by using the equipment and its accessories in the required manner as well as being able to access emergency system and services in the event of an incident or accident.
The qualifying learner is capable of:
- Applying the recognized methods for inspecting and recording the operational fitness of all components of the lift truck with reference to safety procedures in the workplace.
- Identifying and classifying freight/loads considering documentation, packaging and labelling associated with specific freight.
- Handling, loading and storing freight in accordance with industry standards and environmental requirements, and with due consideration to inter alia the commodities and their properties, storage area and placement of load.
- Achieving maximum work performance of lifting equipment and attachments, by applying knowledge of equipment dimensions, controls, principles of operation and capacities, manufacturing specifications and circumstances in the working environment.
- Operating equipment in accordance with laid down organizational and legislative standards and procedures as well as manufacturer's guidelines.
- Accessing available emergency support system and services in case of incidents and accidents.
The following training is offered, using 3 Ton forklift trucks:
FULL LICENCE PROGRAMME
This programme includes 9 hours theoretical training and practical training (estimated 15 machine hours).
RENEWAL PROGRAMME
This programme includes one full day of practical machine time or two half days.
- This can be conducted at the client’s premises.
- Includes licence valid for 2 years.
CERTIFICATION CRITERIA:
On completion of both the theoretical and practical components, the learner will receive a registered skills certificate and a forklift license (valid 2 year), after endorsement from the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA).
