COURSE OVERVIEW
The Occupational Certificate: Freight Handler provides a learning opportunity for learners who wish to pursue and advance a career in the movement of goods and ensure that freight is handled safely and in an efficient way.
A Freight Handler receives, allocates, stores, picks, reconciles, and dispatches freight through a storage facility.
This qualification prepares learners for employment opportunities within the broader freight transport industry, which includes a variety of settings, such as warehouses, factories, ports, rail, and airports.
The knowledge and practical components of the programme obtained thereof will be useful within various goods handling environments.
It also serves to promote the safe and successful transportation of dangerous goods by multi-modes of transport (sea, road, air and rail) and aims to promote professionalism, work ethics and good governance within learners.
THIS COURSE CONSISTS OF THREE DISTINCT LEARNING PHASES: KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICAL, AND WORK EXPERIENCE.
KNOWLEDGE MODULES
The theory component focuses on foundational knowledge in freight handling, including communication, health and safety, quality standards, legislative requirements, environmental awareness, energy efficiency, and ethics. Training is conducted by our expert facilitators where concepts are tested and assessed. A learner needs to gain competency on the knowledge module before proceeding to the practical phase.
PRACTICAL MODULES
The practical modules provide hands-on training in key freight operations, including receiving, allocating, picking, reconciling, and dispatching freight, ensuring learners gain the necessary skills to perform these tasks efficiently. Learners will be assessed on the practical component and must be declared competent before they are sent to the workplace to complete workplace experience.
WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE
In this phase, learners are placed in various companies based on their areas of specialization. The workplace experience focuses on applying processes and procedures in real-world freight handling tasks, such as receiving and dispatching freight, managing allocation systems, and reconciling orders to meet customer and organizational requirements. Through the completion of theory and practical modules, learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the workplace. A trained mentor monitors their progress and ability to perform assigned tasks, which is documented in a logbook and signed off by both the mentor and the learner. Upon completing the workplace experience, learners become eligible to take their EISA exams.
This qualification offers learners an opportunity to further their studies in a variety of specialist areas within the transport sector.

On-the-job experience can progressively lead to positions of more
responsibility in the safe handling of goods and freight.
The qualified learner will be able to:
- Demonstrates receiving of freight.
- Demonstrates allocation of freight for storage and control of stock.
- Prepares and ensures the picking of freight for loading/off-loading processes according to specified procedures.
- Reconciles and dispatches freight according to the legislation.
